Beyond Pain by Kit Rocha (Beyond #3)

Beyond Pain - Kit Rocha

PJV Quickie: Beyond Pain, the latest installment in Kit Rocha’s Beyond series, continues to be compulsively readable: sexy, gritty, and a damn good time.

Review:
Six is a fighter. For as long as she can remember, she hasn’t had anyone but herself to look out for her. Living in Sector 3, under the controlling thumb of Trent Wilson, Six has endured years of abuse, both sexual and emotional. When she is rescued and taken to Sector 4, she doesn’t know what to make of the blatant sexuality that permeates the Sector; Six has only had sex taken from her, and she doesn’t understand how the women of Sector 4 do it because they want to, not because they have to in order to survive. Since Bren took her out of Sector 3, she’s built a relationship with Bren – he teaches her how to fight, and helps her work through questions and observations about Sector 4. There’s also a simmering sexual chemistry between them that Six doesn’t understand or know how to react to.

Bren was an elite soldier in Eden until his commanders realized he had a conscience so they set him up as a scapegoat and he was exiled from Eden. Now living in Sector 4, he is one of Dallas’ inner circle of trusted men. He’s controlled, patient, and his ability to single-mindedly work towards his goal is an asset to Sector 4. He’s got Six set in his sights now but he knows he’s got to move slowly or he’ll scare her off; he’s sure that under her ‘tough loner’ exterior is something special.

In the process of taking control of Sector 3, Dallas sends Bren and Six out to see what’s going on and how much work it’s going to be to fix. There are painful memories for Six in Sector 3, but she’s not a victim anymore, and she’s determined to help rebuild. In the process, she’s learning to be herself and give of herself, and that the rewards of friendship, loyalty, and love are worth the risk of opening yourself and letting people in.

Kit Rocha’s Broken series is a series I just can’t get enough of. Bren and Six were such a great couple, they’re both broken in different ways and it’s part of what makes them such a perfect pair:

" …Her laughter tickled his skin. “You’re my favorite of all the people who’ve ever kidnapped me.”
It was sweet, in a sad, twisted sort of way — which pretty much described both of them perfectly. ”You’re absolutely my favorite person I’ve ever kidnapped.”

It’s a hard life living in the Sectors, and in Sector 4 they release the tension through sex. For someone who’d had her choices taken from her, watching Six move from victim to survivor to protector was sweet, sometimes awkward and painful, but ultimately rewarding. And when Bren was involved, sexy. Very, very sexy.

" He tipped her face up with his fingers under her chin. ”You’re safe here. With me.”
If she hadn’t know that in her bones, she never would have come to his door. There was probably a seductive way to say what she really meant, something suggestive and sexy that’d make his dick harder, but she didn’t like the word submission and didn’t know another one.
So she blurted out the truth, awkward and raw. ”You can have my body. You’ll take better care of it than I ever have.”

While I loved reading Bren and Six create a relationship, I also liked the action that was going on in the Sectors; as soon as I thought I figured out where the story was going things turned around and I was back to”Wow”. I think watching Sector 3 rebuild is going to give us a glimpse of what it was like for Dallas (the leader of Sector 4) when he was building his place and I’m looking forward to reading more. There were a few unanswered questions I wish we’d gotten answers to, but I think (hope) those will be answered as the series continues.

One thing I had a problem with was keeping track of all the characters, although this is probably the fault of the reader and not the author (I’ve been at the same job for 6 years and I still keep a seating chart on my wall so I can remember names). That being said, some new characters were introduced that I’m definitely interested in (*cough*Noah*cough*) and the teasing hints of what’s to come for Cruz/Ace/Rachel have me salivating for their story already.

Recommendations:
Readers who enjoy a good erotic story with dystopian elements. Must love domineering Alpha males who aren’t afraid to admit when they’re wrong and love the women who let them think they’re in charge.
